I AM GARIFUNA is a documentary that follows the journey of Filmmaker Milton Güity Jr (brother of Wes Güity) as he travels to Honduras to investigate, learn and overall experience life as a Garifuna. While both of his parents and older siblings were born in Honduras, Milton Guity Jr was born in the United States and didn’t overtly learn much about Garifuna culture while growing up.
I AM GARIFUNA started out as a nine-minute documentary for a school assignment in the Spring of 2006. It has since evolved into an international tale about the value of culture and an investigation into generational disconnection from ethnic heritage and identity from the perspective of Young Americans.
Milton Güity Jr traveled to Honduras in the spring of 2012 but was limited to Honduras. In 2013, Milton Güity Jr, Wes Güity and Milton Güity Sr traveled to Belize, Guatemala and Nicaragua to continue filming their documentary. Below is a trailer to the I AM GARIFUNA Documentary, which is still in development.
This trailer was first shown at the New York City Screening of the independent film GARIFUNA IN PERIL on October 2nd 2013. Members of the audience were intrigued and curious to know more about the I AM GARIFUNA documentary. I should add that Wes Güity’s father, Milton Güity Sr is a Garifuna Language Instructor in the Bronx. He is one of two people who teach the Garifuna Language on the East Coast of the United States. Milton Güity Sr. is from Corozal, Honduras.
