Belizean Garifuna Singer JOHN JAY RODRIGUEZ Killed During Robbery Attempt in Dangriga, Belize

 

Dangriga, Belize — Belizean Garifuna Musician John Jay Rodriguez was killed in a robbery attempt in Dangriga, Belize on Friday, June 3rd 2016.  In a tragic illustration of the social ramifications of those living in poverty, Mr. Rodriguez was murdered in an attempted robbery of the Havana Club, a gambling spot that he frequented.

Mr. Rodriguez was killed while playing one of the electronic gambling machines in the establishment.  Three men, one armed with a 9mm gun, entered the Havana Club, demanded money and were denied entry by the cashier on duty.  Foiled in their robbery attempt, one man fired one shot at patrons of the Havana Club.  That shot grazed 38 year old Stanley Vaney (he survived) and killed Mr. John Jay Rodriguez, as the bullet pierced the left side of the face.

The National Garifuna Council of Belize has issued a press release condemning the senseless killing of this young singer, and father.  They urge residents with information to work with the police so that they can help with the investigations, resulting in convictions.

From the Garifuna village of Hopkins, Belize; Mr. Rodriguez worked as a deliveryman at Quality Poultry Products in Dangriga, Belize for over twelve years.  He was remembered by co-workers as a hard worker, sweet, loving and always joyful.

Mr. Rodriguez was also in the process of finishing up a music album scheduled to be released shortly.  In 2014, he was a contestant on Season One of the Belize singing competition show, “If You Can Sing It, Bring It”, making it all the way to the semi-finals as one of the top four singers in the competition.    Inspired by International Singing Superstar Michael Jackson, Mr. Rodriguez began to pursue music at a very young age.  He also collaborated with Belizean superstar singer SUPA G, which yielded some hits like the 2005 song, “Hold You” on the Supa G Sunrise album.
