While the Presidential Election gets the attention of American citizens, it’s the local elections that really count.  As a practical matter, Politics in the United States of America are local and it’s in the smaller elections (councilmen, state assembly people, congressman, etc), where a difference can truly be made in the lives of citizens.

As Garinagu in New York City and NY State work to publicly assert themselves as an ethnic group and weave themselves into the fabric of New York City life, this attempt to integrate a member of the community into the political world is noteworthy and it will be interesting to see what becomes of it.  I currently do not know if a person of Garifuna heritage has ever been elected into public office in New York State, but as this process unfolds, an education is in order.

Being a State Committee Member of a respective party in your state involves, attending and participating in the state conventions of your political party, serving as a broker / middle-person / contact person between community and local officials, elected officials / politicians, and finally brings back information from those politicians to let party members of the assembly district know that their concerns are being worked on.

As stated earlier, Mrs. Rosemary Ordoñez-Jenkins is a Senior Director for Community Resources for Phipps Neighborhoods.  She is also a member of the Bronx non-profit organization, Friends of Crotona Park Inc and I am familiar with her through her attendance at various Garifuna Coalition Roundtable meetings.  I can vouch for her character and attest to the difference she has made in the lives of many New York City residents, both Garifuna and non-Garifuna.  Full disclosure, I have served as the Photographer and Social Media Administrator for Friends of Crotona Park Inc since 2010.  It was Mrs. Rosemary Ordoñez-Jenkins who hired me for the gig.

As tired as people are of Politics, as a practical matter, it is something that must be scrutinized and taken seriously as a tactic for improving the standard of living for American residents.  At the same time, there is a very good reason, why people are as tired of the state of Politics as it exists today.

So the question now is, will Mrs. Rosemary Ordoñez-Jenkins get the support that she needs to be placed on the ballot in September’s Democratic primary? This Democratic Primary takes place on September 13th 2016.  Time will tell.  She has assembled a team that is doing the legwork of knocking on doors, gathering signatures and overall engaging with the public to have Bronx residents become aware of her potential candidacy.  Will all that work matter?  We shall find out shortly.   Please contact Jose Francisco Avila at (917) 383-7014 or garifunapac@gmail.com  for additional information or if you have any questions.
