Rio Dulce, Izabal, Guatemala – – On Sunday, June 22, 2025, a Lancha (Speedboat in Spanish) carrying 15 passengers capsized within The Small Gulf or Bay of Río Dulce in Izabal, Guatemala, claiming the lives of three people: Heidy Rivas Blanco, a 37-year-old Teacher of Guatemalan Garifuna Heritage, César Cajbón Maaz, a 3-year-old boy, and Delmy López (Age, Occupation, and other Identifying Information not available at time of Publication).
.

.
The accident occurred during a routine trip along the Río Dulce, a vital waterway connecting people from deep within Guatemala to the Garifuna Town of Livingston ‘Labuga’, known for its scenic jungle-lined shores and vibrant Garifuna communities.
.

.
You need a boat to get anywhere along the route, in fact, most homes and businesses along the Río Dulce have a boat dock.
.

.
Preliminary reports indicate the Speedboat, which is a small motorized boat, a common mode of transport in this road-scarce region (they are like water taxis), may have been overloaded or encountered sudden adverse conditions, though the exact cause remains under investigation by Guatemalan authorities.

The vessel overturned in the early evening, plunging passengers into the fresh waters of The Small Gulf or Bay of Rio Dulce. Local fishermen and boatmen swiftly responded, rescuing ten survivors, some of whom sustained injuries requiring medical attention.
.
Search efforts continued into June 23, with the Guatemalan Navy’s Divers, alongside community volunteers, combing the area.
.
Heidy Rivas Blanco’s body was found entangled in a fisherman’s net, underscoring the tragic nature of the incident, while 3 Year Old, César Cajbón Maaz’s body was located nearby.

The Río Dulce, which begins at the mouth of the river, which is where Livingston, Labuga, Guatemala is, extends further southwest deeper into Guatemala, and finally, leads to Lake Izabal, is a lifeline for locals and a haven for cruisers, has a history of maritime risks, including thefts and occasional accidents due to its narrow passages and heavy reliance on small vessels.
.
This tragedy has prompted calls from community leaders for enhanced safety regulations, including mandatory life jackets and stricter boat capacity limits. This Boating Tragedy brings to mind the devastating Boating Accident where a Ferry carrying New Year’s partiers capsized in Guatemala in January of 1989, where 68 People were killed, and approximately an additional 30 more Missing.
.
The Garifuna community, to which Rivas Blanco belonged, is reeling from the loss of a respected educator, and a period of mourning has begun across Livingston, Izabal, Guatemala.

Today we lost not only a friend, but also a Mother, leaving behind three beautiful girls. Those of us who had the good fortune to spend time with her know she was a wonderful person, a hardworking woman, an excellent daughter, and a sister.

Rest In Peace, my beautiful one. You will live forever in my heart, along with the beautiful moments we shared as girls in the neighborhood.

Authorities are analyzing the Speedboat’s condition, passenger manifest, and weather data to determine contributing factors. The incident has cast a shadow over the region, known for its tranquil beauty and rich cultural heritage, as residents demand answers and improved safety measures to prevent future tragedies.

Beiba Ameragua, Miss Heidy Rivas Blanco.
Dear Tío Teo,
First and foremost, I want to extend my deepest condolences to the family of Ms. Rivas Blanco, as well as to the loved ones of the other victims affected by this tragic accident.
As someone with family members who frequently travel on these ferry boats, I’m genuinely concerned that such incidents can still occur. I truly appreciate you bringing this article to light—especially since many other news outlets, like the June 23rd broadcast of Noticiero Telemundo, failed to even mention Ms. Rivas Blanco by name, focusing only on the other victims.
Once again, my heartfelt sympathies go out to Ms. Rivas Blanco’s family, friends, and students. Please Tio Teo continue the important work you’re doing in keeping us informed.
Jen Rochez,
Seremein (“Thanks” in the Garifuna Language) for writing, Miss Rochez. Feedback is crucial and I wish more people would write comments here on the Being Garifuna website/blog.
Thank you for pointing out that the media coverage you saw yesterday didn’t mention Professor Heidy Rivas Blanco by name. It seems they made a correction in their news reports today, as I saw two news reports focused on Professor Heidy Rivas Blanco.
Your point remains the same and highlights the need for a website like this.
