Bronx, New York – The Black Institute organization invites the Garifuna Community to a Community Meeting where information about Immigration, Health Care and Housing will be shared and discussed.

.

This meeting will serve as an introduction to The Black Institute organization, where they will discuss:

  1. Who They Are
  2. What They Do
  3. Services they are offering to the Garifuna Community

Other subjects that are scheduled to be discussed are: DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), Getting a Green Card, OCOV (Our City Our Vote).

OCOV refers to Our City Our Vote, refers to recent legislation that allows Green Card holders and those authorized to work in the United States having the ability to vote in New York City elections and are otherwise qualified to register and vote under New York State election law.

Garifuna Community Meeting in the Bronx on FRIDAY, October 28th 2022.

.

Mirtha Arzu, a Garifuna American Health Care worker from the Bronx, along with Dr. Ovelio Lopez, a Garifuna from Honduras, are working with The Black Institute’s George Cayasso, a Community Organizer from Nicaragua, to organize and set up this meeting and Initiative with the Garifuna Community.

.

Mirtha Arzu explained that she walked the Bronx streets with Mr. George Cayasso sharing flyers and talking directly with the people about this meeting.

.

They visited Local Shelters, walked down Third Avenue in the Bronx and also visited Waporu Park (Bill Rainey Park) in the Bronx to spread the word about this meeting.

Founded in 2010, The Black Institute is a think-tank (they bill themselves as an “action-tank”). That is, a group of experts that provide advice on specific political and/or economic problems.

The Black Institute website states that they shape “intellectual discourse and impacted public policy from the perspective of Black people in America and people of color throughout the diaspora by using forward-thinking strategies to achieve racial equity.”
