Miami, Florida – In June of 2007, The Miami Herald published a series entitled: A Rising Voice: Afro-Latin Americans. In it, Black Life in Latin America (Central America, South America and The Caribbean) are explored in various regions.

The Overview serves to introduce the series to the Miami Herald readers.

Life for Garifuna People are looked into in Part 1 of this Series. Here, Garifuna Culture is described as “Fading” and struggling for rights and education needed for survival.

Life for Blacks in Nicaragua is looked into in Part 1 of this Series. The feeling that there is a cultural and civil rights awakening in Nicaragua as well as throughout Latin America are explored here.

Life for Blacks in the Dominican Republic is looked into in Part 2 of this Series. The practice of straightening hair is looked at as a rejection of all things Black.

Life for Blacks in Brazil are explored in Part 3. In some instances, life stands in stark contrast to the public perception of Brazil as a Racial Democracy.

The Life of Blacks in Cuba are examined in Part 4. Of particular note are the lives of Blacks in Cuba under Communist Rule led by Fidel Castro.

The Miami Herald returns to Brazil in Part 5. Here, The Complexities of Race are explored by Journalist Leonard Pitts Jr.
