Bronx, New York – Garifuna Non-Profit Organization, Casa Yurumein recently announced the return of in-person Conversational Garifuna Language Class taught by Garifuna Language Teacher, Milton Guity Sr.

This Eight Week course, will begin on FRIDAY, May 26th 2023 and take place at the new headquarters location for Casa Yurumein in the Bronx.

Mr. Milton Guity Sr is from Corozal, Honduras and has taught this class since 2009. He came to the United States in 1987.

As people are less inclined to speak the Garifuna Language, courses like this are designed to help preserve and protect our Garifuna cultural heritage. Especially since overall, we tend to defer to the languages of the dominant society like English and Spanish.

The course covers rules of grammar, the teaching of Garifuna vocabulary, the structure of sentences and overall, how to have a conversation in the Garifuna Language.

The last couple of years, the course was taught over the Internet. Specifically via Zoom conference calls as a response to Covid-19 Lockdowns in New York City. This session however, marks a return to in-person learning.

The fee for this course is $50 and that covers the entire eight classes.

Classes will take place on Friday evenings in the Bronx from 6pm to 8pm.

The first class is FRIDAY, May 26th 2023 and the final class of this session is July 14th 2023. I do not know if those interested in participating in the class remotely through the Internet, but I will try and find out.

The Casa Yurumein Cultural Center is located at 1300 Southern Blvd. It’s near the Freeman Street Bronx subway station on the 2 or 5 Train Subway Line.
