Organized and produced by Promoter of Belizean Garifuna Heritage, Ozzie “Spice Killa” Smith, the Festival was an opportunity for Musical Artists and Performers of Garifuna Heritage or Central American/Caribbean Heritage to sing, perform and show what they could do.

This festival took place every summer behind Boys & Girls High School. Parallel to the field where many Brooklyn cultural events took place over the years.

Technically, Boys & Girls High School is in Bedford-Stuyvesant, but it’s Fulton Street location is on the border between Bedford-Stuyvesant and Crown Heights.

The 2009 Belize Fest was my first time at a show of such magnitude. I got to meet many of the artists who make up the New York Garifuna Music Scene and was impressed by their talent and passion for Garifuna Music.

Most performed the Punta Rock genre of music, but some also performed Paranda. Other artists also performed Reggae, Hip-Hop and other genres of Carribean music.

The fact that many of them were relatively young (at the time) was also impressive. As far as I can tell, many of these artists were Teenagers or in the early to mid-Twenties.

You can see the entire photo album on Facebook. But that will make it difficult to see. At some point, I will post the photos into my Flickr account, and folks interested in the subject can see them there.
