This Cultural Pageant also serves as a way for the New York City Garifuna Community to exercise their Garifuna-ness as they watch the contestants try to out-Garifuna the other. Pride is also a factor as people from Garifuna towns from Mother Countries of Honduras, Guatemala and Belize rally and cheer on representatives of said Garifuna towns.

As I mentioned previously when writing about Miss Garifuna Pageants in Atlanta, New Orleans and Belize, the cultural subtext at root during these Miss Garifuna Cultural Pageants is the reverse cultural acculturation that takes place.

Typical acculturation in America is learning the customs and ways of the dominant society in order to simply live and survive. In the training these Young Ladies go through when preparing to take part in the Miss Garifuna Cultural Pageant, these young ladies get reacquainted with aspects of Garifuna Culture that they may be unfamiliar with. In some ways, their Garifuna-ness is reinforced.

.

Many Garinagu feel that aspects of Garifuna culture are getting lost as younger generations of Garinagu become Americanized. These Miss Garifuna Cultural Pageants, are a way for these Young Ladies to become centered in Garifuna-ness.
