Long Beach, California – The Museum of Latin American Art is hosting a kick-off event for their 3rd Annual Afro-Latinx Series and Festival there. This kick-off event will feature and celebrate Garifuna Culture. A key component of this event will be a FREE Screening of the Film, Garifuna In Peril.

This Kick-Off Event will include a Pop-Up Community Tour of The Garifuna Museum of Los Angeles Collections, the Screening of the film Garifuna In Peril, a Panel Discussion of The Film, Garifuna In Peril, and finally a Garifuna Drum and Dance Performance by Wayanagu Group. Garifuna Cuisine by Chef Karim Mejia of Kulcha Flavaz will be available for purchase as well as drinks.

Released in 2012, Garifuna In Peril narrative focuses on a Garifuna language teacher, Ricardo (played by Co-Director, Ruben Reyes), who struggles to preserve his endangered Afro-Amerindian culture by building a language school in his home village in Honduras, Central America.

Directed by Ali Allie and Ruben Reyes, Garifuna In Peril makes it’s own history as the first major feature film with the majority of dialogue in Garifuna, a language proclaimed by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

1pm to 1:30pm – Pop/Up Community Exhibit Tour of Garifuna ]Museum of Los Angeles Collections. Tour will be led by Community Leaders Bill Flores (who is also co-writer of Garifuna In Peril) and Calvin Williams (VIVA Center)

1:30pm to 3:30pm – Film Screening of Garifuna In Peril, Directed by Ali Allie and Ruben Reyes. (Viva Center)

3:30pm to 4:15pm – Garifuna In Peril Film Panel Discussion with the Directors, Co-Writer Bill Flores, and African American Cultural Center of Los Angeles Representative (Viva Center)

4:30pm to 5:15pm Garifuna Drum and Dance Performance featuring Wanaragua / Jankunu Ancestral War Dance, and Traditional Cultural Dances of Parranda and Punta (Sculpture Garden)

1pm to 6pm Enjoy Garifuna Cuisine with Chef Karim Mejia from Kulcha Flavaz and Curated Rum Cocktails at Museum of Latin American Art’s Cocktail Lab. FOOD AND DRINKS MUST BE PURCHASED.
