Belize, Central America: The Second Catholic Garifuna from Belize, The Most Reverend Lawrence Nicasio, was welcomed by Belize’s Catholics as he was ordained as Bishop of Belize City and Belmopan on SATURDAY, May 13th 2017.

.

The ceremony took place at St. John’s College Gymnasium.

.

The Papal Nuncio of El Salvador, Archibishop Leon Kalenga led the mass with six other bishops. Bishop Nicasio received the pastoral staff, miter and ring of his office from Archibishop Karenga.

.

Guests included, Deputy Prime Minister Patrick Faber and Opposition Leader Hon. John Briceno, Minister Hon. Frank Mena and the U.S. Embassy’s Charge de Affaires Adrienne Kalanek.

.

Bishop Nicasio was appointed Bishop of Belize in January 2017, when Bishop Rev. Dorick Wright resigned his office due to failing eyesight and overall poor health. Bishop Wright was able to attend the Mass and Ceremony in a wheelchair and gave Bishop Nicasio his blessing.

.

Below is a news account about the ceremony. In it, you can see the Catholic delegations from Parishes across the country packed the Gymnasium to full capacity. The biggest delegations came from Orange Walk, where Bishop Nicasio served as Parish Priest of La Inmaculada Parish for 13 Years. Another big delegation came from Dangriga, where he is from.
