There weren’t many videos about Garifuna people in Nicaragua before 2010. Below is one that I found which was produced in June 2009.

Produced and Narrated (in Spanish) by Nicaraguan Journalist, Neyda Dixon (she is Kriol), the video is a basic introduction to the Garifuna people of Nicaragua.

Topics briefly spoken about included: customs, food, cultural background, colors of the Garifuna Flag, and history of the Garifuna people of Nicaragua.

Justina Solis, a promoter of the preservation of Garifuna culture, spoke about Garifuna Food. In particular, the differences between the ingredients the Garifuna people use in their food and the ingredients used by the Mestizo (roughly translated as people of European and American Indian descent).

Vernan Ramos, a Nicaraguan Garifuna Dancer and Musician, talked about the various Garifuna Dances danced by the Garifuna.

Elder Garifuna Man, Absalom Velazquez Zenon, as well as — spoke about his speaking of the Garifuna Language and why few speak it currently.

Victorina Lopez, a Garifuna Language Teacher, spoke about the Garifuna Language being key to the identity of the Garifuna people and why it’s important to learn and speak the Language.

Nicaraguan Garifuna Woman, Kensy Sambola

Kensy Sambola, a Nicaraguan Garifuna activist and Operator of a small family hotel in Orinoco, Nicaragua, Hostal Garifuna, spoke about efforts to teach the Garifuna Language in the educational system in Central America.

Justina Solis concludes by noting the help Nicaraguan Garifuna people have received from fellow Honduran Garifunas and Belizean Garifunas in preserving the Garifuna culture.

She adds with optimism that progress has been made.
