Manhattan, New York City – The Garifuna American Law Enforcement Association hosted its First Ever Garifuna Heritage Celebration earlier this week.

.

.

Held in the Auditorium of One Police Plaza in Manhattan, New York City, this one of a kind event helped propel this Unique Association into the minds of Citizens as they come to learn about this Association.

.

.

I was unable to attend in person due to work, but the event seems to have been successful.

.

.

As more people become aware of this Association, Future Events likely will be bigger and bigger.

.

.

Formed in 2017 by Police Officer Jorge Rochez and Detective Sidney Valerio, The Garifuna American Law Enforcement Association gathered uniformed members of Garifuna Heritage from The New York Police Department and Beyond (I know of Members who work with The Department of Corrections, U.S. Border Patrol and even The Fire Department of New York!!!) to join this Association.

.

.

According to their website, The Garifuna American Law Enforcement Association are dedicated to strengthening the relationship between the Garifuna Community and Law Enforcement.

.

.

They hope to foster mutual understanding, respect and cooperation between Law Enforcement and The New York City Garifuna Community.

.

.

The Garifuna American Law Enforcement Association aim to do this through community outreach, being a law enforcement liason, and expanding cultural awareness through their events.

.

.

With trust and respect in the authorities being at a low amongst the public due to the high profile incidents between the Police and Citizens like the Deaths of George Floyd, Michael Brown, Breoanna Taylor, etc, this measured communication and outreach hopefully can lead to healing.
