New Garifuna Short Film to be Shown in New York City

New York City – A new Garifuna Short Film is being shown to the Public in New York City this early August Weekend.

.

The Film is called, Afieni (Faith or Belief in the Garifuna Language) and this showing will be the first time people outside of Film Festival Audiences will get a chance to see it.

.

Starring Gloria Lambey and Sharley Castillo, Afieni is about a Garifuna Woman who while during a Spiritual Conflict, abandons her Traditional Garifuna Spirituality because of Organized Religion. The Short Film is in the Garifuna Language with English Subtitles. Below is the trailer of this short film, Afieni.

Following the showing of Afieni Short Film, The Filmmaker responsible for the film, Belizean Garifuna Filmmaker, Felene M. Cayetano along with Belizean Garifuna Drummer and Garifuna Advocate, Alex Colon, will lead a Conversation about the theme of the Short Film – namely, Traditional Garifuna Spirituality versus Organized Religion.

This New York City showing of the New, Garifuna Short Film, Afieni, is also an opportunity to develop the distribution and promotion of Garifuna Art Products amongst Garifuna Owned and/or Operated Venues.

Filmed on location in Hopkins, Belize and Dangriga, Belize by a mostly Garifuna Cast and Crew, Producers say that this short film is the first narrative Garifuna Language Short Film was Produced and Directed by Garifuna Women.

Afieni was an Official Selection Of The 2023 Belize International Film Festival and The 2024 Jamaica International Faith and Family Film Festival.

Afieni was Written, Directed and Co-Produced by Librarian, Felene M. Cayetano. Afieni was Produced by Dr. Gwen Nuñez Gonzalez, a Belizean Garifuna Woman noted for her efforts to revitalize the usage of the Garifuna Language in Belize.

The First Showing of the New, Garifuna Short Film, Afieni, will be TODAY, Friday, August 2nd 2024 at 7pm at Casa Yurumein in the Bronx. Admission is $5 at the Door.

The Second Showing of the new Garifuna Short Film, Afieni, will take place on SATURDAY, August 3rd 2024 at 5:30pm at Haba Wasanigu in Brooklyn.

About Felene M. Cayetano

Felene M. Cayetano was born in Belize City, Belize in 1978. She is an Author, Mother, Publisher, Librarian and now, Filmmaker.

.

.

Her migration from Belize to Los Angeles, California, at the age of Nine was a key factor that led to writing poetry in Primary School before easing into writing short stories.

.

Felene M. Cayetano performing in The BBC Contains Strong Language Poetry and Performance Festival in Leeds, England in September 2023.

This love of writing was balanced by a love of reading which gave her the vocabulary to describe her experiences and an appreciation for libraries.

.

.

Her two collections of Poetry are entitled “Evolution: Weaving In and Out of Consciousness While the Truth is Somewhere in the Middle” and “Crossing Bridges”.

.

“Belizean Nail Soup” is the title of her Short Story Anthology with other Belizean Writers.

.

.

Felene pursued and attained a Bachelor’s Degree in English from the University of Baltimore, then a Master’s Degree in Information Science from Pratt Institute School of Information and Library Science. She also wrote, directed and produced another short film called Sides, which is currently being screened in Film Festivals.
