Bronx, New York – In his speech introducing Garifuna Activist, Mrs. Mirtha Colon for Women’s History Month in March 2022, U.S. Congressman mentioned something that apparently went unnoticed.

In his speech, Mr. Torres talked about how she was the Inspiration for the creation of a Garifuna Caucus. The first of it’s kind.

Say what? A Garifuna Caucus?

I began to do some research to try and get a sense of what is a Caucus and what would having one mean for Garifuna people in New York.

I called the Primary Contact listed for U.S. Congressman Ritchie Torres’s Garifuna Caucus and left a message upon learning of this Garifuna Caucus in 2022. I left a message asking for more information. However, I didn’t get a reply.

There isn’t much information as to The United States Garifuna Caucus. On the website I visited, it states that the Garifuna Caucus is a Committee.

According to the website of U.S. Congressman Ed Case, U.S. Congress People and Senators generally act together through various committees and caucuses to advance mutual goals and review proposed legislation.

This is pure speculation on my part, but perhaps this U.S. Garifuna Caucus will get some clarity and progress on U.S. Immigration Issues? Namely, getting The Department of Homeland Security to grant TPS Status to Immigrants from Central America?

And what about dealing with Honduran ZEDES (Economic and Employment Zones) Policies?

Time will tell whether this United States Garifuna Caucus will amount to anything.

Mrs. Mirtha Colon is a social worker turned Garifuna Activist from Trujillo, Honduras. In addition to serving as President of Hondurans Against AIDS Inc (a.k.a. Casa Yurumein), she also serves as President of ONECA (Central American Black Organization) and also heads up Americas Alliance, which brings over 55 Latin American organizations, many of them from Mexico.
