Atlanta, Georgia – Young Women Scholars, Students at Women’s HBCU (Historically Black College and University), Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, participated in a one of a kind class during International Education Week in November 2023.

Walagante Expo Garifuna Museum , a Mobile Garifuna Museum that travels to schools with an Exhibit on various aspects of Garifuna culture,
partnered with Spelman College’s Food Studies Department and Assistant Professor from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Dr. James Daria, to demonstrate the making of Hudut/Hudutu, a staple food in Garifuna Culture.

During International Education Week, November 13th 2023 through November 17th 2023 at Spelman College, Dorina Chimilio and Miriam Chimilio of Walagante Expo Garifuna Museum as well as Elga Cacho, led a demonstration detailing the process of making Hudutu.

Judging by the photos provided by Miriam Chimilio, the Women Students of Spelman College fully participated in the making of this unique food.

Similar to Fufu in some African countries, Hudutu (a.k.a Machuca) consists of Mashed Plantain Bananas, Coconut and other Ingredients that is typically eaten in a seafood soup meal.

Founded in 1881, Spelman College is a prestigious, highly selective, liberal arts HBCU (Historically Black College and University) Women’s College.

Spelman is the sister HBCU to the All Men’s HBCU, Morehouse College.
.
The other college in the area is Clark Atlanta University, which has both men and women. Morris Brown College is also in the area, but I am not sure if it is still open.
.
On a personal note, I applied to and was admitted to both Morehouse College in Atlanta and Howard University in Washington D.C.
.
I only wanted to go to Morehouse but didn’t get enough scholarship money to let me go. Getting Financial Aid from a HBCU is a big challenge.

Graduates of Historically Black Colleges and Universities often go on to the top of their respective fields in Business, Arts, Politics, Law, Sciences, Medical Fields, etc.

Below, I list Notable Alumni of both Spelman College and Morehouse College in Atlanta. I named celebrities readers of this Being Garifuna website may be more inclined to be familiar with. However, there are many more Alumni who have gone on to distinguished careers, but they are not well known, so I did not include them below.

Notable Alumni of Spelman College include: Author Alice Walker (“The Color Purple”), Actress Keisha Knight Pulliam (“The Cosby Show”), Actress Esther Rolle (“Good Times”), Lawyer and Writer who ran for Governor of Georgia, Stacey Abrams, New York City Politician, Laurie Cumbo.

Notable Alumni for Morehouse College include: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, Movie Director, Spike Lee, Actor Sam Jackson, United States Senator, Raphael Warnock, Rapper Killer Mike, Actor John David Washington (Son of Actor Denzel Washington) and Former Atlanta Mayor, Maynard Jackson.
