NYPD Recruit of Garifuna Heritage, Mr. Edgar Ordoñez, Dies After Collapsing at Training Facility in the Bronx

Bronx, New York – Police said that a Recruit for The New York Police Department, Mr. Edgar Ordoñez, passed away after having a Medical Episode at a NYPD Training Facility in the Bronx.

On Wednesday, July 10th 2024, at about 11am in the morning, 33 Year Old NYPD Recruit, Mr. Edgar Ordoñez, was on the Exertion Course at Rodman’s Neck, a New York Police Department outdoor firing range, when according to the news, he became light-headed and passed out.

Mr. Edgar Ordoñez was taken to Jacobi Medical Center and after attempts to revive him failed, pronounced him Dead.

At the time of this Publication, Police Authorities don’t know exactly what Mr. Ordoñez was doing during the Training Exercise.

Apparently, this Training Exercise was one of the final exercises Mr. Ordoñez had to complete during his Probationary Period before Graduating from The Police Academy next Monday and officially joining The New York Police Department.

The Medical Examiner will try to determine the cause of death. At this time, Authorities don’t know if Mr. Ordoñez’s death had anything to do with the Hot Temperatures New Yorkers are dealing with during this current Heat Wave.

Mr. Edgar Ordoñez was of Honduran Garifuna Heritage, with his family mostly from Sambo Creek, Honduras. He may also have Roots in San Antonio, Honduras and Santa Fe, Honduras, but those two locations have not been confirmed.

Born and raised in The Bronx in New York City, Mr. Edgar Ordoñez attended Samuel Gompers Industrial High School in The Bronx.

Mr. Edgar Ordoñez was a Father to Twins, a Boy and a Girl. Mr. Edgar Ordoñez also had two sisters who he leaves behind.

Reaction to the news of Mr. Ordoñez’s passing was uniform as people are shocked by the loss of life of one so relatively young. I didn’t personally know Mr. Ordoñez, but by all accounts, he was a good guy. Family Friend, Julie Espinoza, stated,

“He was always a humble guy. Bien Respetoso. Always off the scene. Never into no Trouble, Nothing like that. Edgar was a Good Guy. Like I said, You never know when God is gonna call on us.” – Family Friend, Miss Julie Espinoza

New York Police Commissioner, Edward Caban, posted on X/Twitter about Mr. Edgar Ordoñez. He said,

“Our hearts are heavy as we honor our fallen brother, Probationary Police Officer, Edgar Ordoñez. We tragically lost Edgar earlier today, just a few days before he was set to graduate and join his fellow Finest protecting New York City.”

“As we continue to grieve this terrible loss, we will keep Edgar’s family, friends and fellow officers in our thoughts and prayers.”

New York City Mayor Eric Adams also spoke on the passing of Mr. Edgar Ordoñez. On X/Twitter, he said,

“Probationary Police Officer Edgar Ordoñez was committed to protecting New Yorkers, and his journey has ended far too soon. The loss of a dedicated public servant is a reminder of just how dangerous this heat can be.”

“My prayers are with his family, loved ones and colleagues.”
